ABOUT

Skye Atkins

I am a self-taught artist based in Montevideo, Uruguay.

I smash the glass with a controlled force so that the glass breaks in a predictable manner, yet every break is unique making each artwork completely unreplicable. Alluding to the uniqueness of our identities.

I give meaning to my sculptures by representing each crack as linguistic, social and cultural aspects that come together creating and transforming an individual's identity. Without these aspects, an identity cannot exist.

However, I invite all spectators to come up with their interpretations as everyone is unique but also because the glass sculptures have many metaphorical meanings for life, for example in the process of making, I can't undo a crack thus I must continue, just like how we go through the path of life. Another example is how the broken glass refracts light, creating a glistening and sparkling effect at different angles metaphorical for how we perceive life.
